La Scala, the heart and soul of Milan Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: 🤍 As the world's most venerated opera house, known to Italians as Il Teatro alla Scala, prepares for the opening night of the season, members of the community surrounding the 18th-century theatre explain its historical, cultural and social importance for the people of Milan, and the international opera community.
Opera in three acts, in Italian, with Hungarian surtitle Preface 0:00 Act 1 9:08 Act 2 59:34 Act 3 1:49:22 Conductor - Riccardo Chailly Floria Tosca - Anna Netrebko Mario Cavaradossi - Francesco Meli Scarpia - Luca Salsi Sagrestano - Alfonso Antoniozzi Cesare Angelotti - Carlo Cigni Spoletta - Carlo Bosi Sciarrone - Giulio Mastrototaro A Jailer - Ernesto Panariello A Shepherd boy - Gianluigi Sartori Director - Davide Livermore With the new production of Tosca in Roger Parker’s critical edition for Ricordi, Music Director Riccardo Chailly continues his project of presenting Giacomo Puccini’s operas in the light of the latest musicological research, with which he has already brought Turandot, La fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly and Manon Lescaut back to La Scala. While over the course of the decades the work of Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi has been re-evaluated thanks to critical editions and the examination of variants, Giacomo Puccini’s masterpieces have so far been presented in versions that often unwittingly bore the incrustations of tradition; hence the importance of this proposal. However, this opening Tosca will be above all a celebration of music – thanks also to the superb voices of Anna Netrebko, Francesco Meli and Luca Salsi – and of theatre, with the return of director Davide Livermore and set designers Giò Forma, already greatly acclaimed for Attila of 7 December 2018.

The great Maria Callas performs an aria from her signature role, Bellini's druid priestess Norma, with the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Paris and Georges Sebastian. Recorded live at the Palais Garnier on the 19th of December 1958, this concert marked the soprano's debut at the Paris Opera, a major social event for Parisians and for which Callas donned her most elegant couture and a million dollars' worth of jewelry. Website 🤍 Facebook 🤍 Instagram 🤍 La Scala Opera House is one of the most celebrated in the world. Discover how La Scala and its square are more than just a theatre for the Milanese. Caption: You are now in the La Scala square, the most celebrated square of Milan together with the Duomo square. I like to point out how this square summarizes all the aspects which make Milan a city of capital importance: culture, finance, trade, political power and fashion. Let's start with La Scala Opera House. Built in 1778, it's arguably the most important and celebrated Opera House in the world. Sometimes tourists are a bit puzzled by the fact that its facade is somewhat unimpressive. I agree, the facade is a bit understating, but its interiors are amazing, a treasure chest of gilded decorations. And you can see them without having to fight for an opera ticket! Simply head for the La Scala Museum, on the left hand side of the Opera House, and if they are not setting up a show you will get the chance to have a look at the Theatre's magnificent interior. On the left side of the square you can see the former headquarters of the Commercial Bank of Italy. Financial Power has always been important in Milan, which is in fact Italy's financial capital. The building now hosts a brand new museum, showing the bank's rich artistic collection. It's certainly worth a visit, because of its collection, spanning from the XIX century to contemporary Arte Povera artists, because of its unusual setting in a former bank building, and, last but not least, because it's completely free! Opposite the Opera House there is Palazzo Marino, Milan's City Hall, where the political power of the City resides. Not surprisingly, being Milan so finance-centered, this building was primarily built as the house of a banker in the XVI century. It is now the center of Milan's political power, and sometimes it hosts free art exhibitions. Finally, you can see the entrance of the celebrated Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. It was the oldest shopping mall in Italy, built at the end of the XIX century, and it connects La Scala square with the Duomo square. It hosts plenty of elegant fashion shops and features a magnificent marble floor under an impressive glass and steel vault. It also has a kind of sinister flavour, because, its designer Giuseppe Mengoni, died by falling down from the glass dome just after the inauguration - if it was accident or suicide will remain an unsolved mystery. Please have a look at the statue in the center of the square. Can you recognize it? It is the statue of Leonardo da Vinci, who lived in Milan for 17 years and left here an important mark, symbolized especially by the Last Supper. #lascalatheatre #milan #travelitaly

Hello my friends, and welcome to our Spring 2023 Newsletter!! As always I’m thrilled to be sharing more updates with you, and a lot has been announced in the past couple of months. Firstly, I’m grateful for all the honors and awards that I’ve been privileged to receive this year. While I’m not after trophies and accolades, it is of course with humble gratitude that I pledge my continued devotion to this work, and to always strive for excellence in all I do. It means so much to me that people appreciate and are inspired by this wonderful art form, one that I’m privileged to practice every day. So, thank you! My Spring season is in bloom with two marvelous roles: Lucia di Lammermoor at Teatro alla Scala, which is a new production that was postponed from 2020, and Fiorilla in Il Turco in Italia at the Teatro Real. I’m always happy to sing bel canto, and in such fabulous theatres as these, it’s a great joy! Lucia I’ve sung many times, but to sing it at La Scala is an absolute highlight of my life and career, for which I feel very honored. As for Fiorilla, it’s a role I sang early on in my career and after 12 years she’s back! I so enjoy singing comedic roles! It’s nice to have a change of pace from the more tragic operas I’ve been doing lately. Both Amalia in I masnadieri in Munich and Ophélie in Hamlet in Paris were wonderfully successful runs, and it was also exciting to be part of the Mozart Requiem performance in Salzburg. What a treat. Thank you to all who have been watching these and sending messages. We hope to see you in Milan and Madrid! → REFLECTIONS Watching the video footage from our Vlog that accompanies this Newsletter, I was overwhelmed with how many beautiful things we saw these past few months. I’m so incredibly grateful that we have been able to travel and see some stunning places, experience the grandeur of nature, and the beauty of the intimate quiet of the wintertime. With every new season there are surprises and more beauties to behold, and I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to experience these things, on and off stage, with my wonderful husband who’s always there supporting me and working together with me. We are lucky and beyond thankful that we can lead this incredible life, and that the road ahead is one that we march on together. This work can be very demanding and difficult, but the rewards really are endless, if you open your heart to receive them. And every time I look around, I see gifts and blessings. For each and every one of those, this Easter season reminds me to be grateful. 🎭 Lucia di Lammermoor April 13, 16, 20, 23, 26, 29 and May 02, 05 Teatro alla Scala Milano, MI 🎭 Il Turco in Italia May 31 and June 04, 06, 09, 12 Teatro Real Madrid, ES - 🇫🇷🎶 Rossini & Donizetti - French Bel Canto Arias 🤍 💿 Buy Here! 🤍 🎧 Listen on iTunes! 🤍 🎧 Listen on Spotify! 🤍 ➠ FOLLOW ME ☟ Instagram → 🤍 Twitter → 🤍 Facebook → 🤍 Website → 🤍 0:00 - Intro 10:46 - Munich 15:48 - Salzburg 17:27 - Paris 20:30 - Chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres 20:56 - Half-Marathon
(c) 🤍 Australian Premiere Screenings 27, 28 Nov and 1 Dec, 2021 New Production! From maestro Riccardo Chailly and director Damiano Michieletto, this gripping and highly intelligent La Scala staging combines visual impact and dramaturgical depth. Promised anything she wants by her Stepfather King Herod (Gerhard Siegel), Salome (radiant soprano Elena Stikhina) demands the head of the prophet Jochanaan (Wolfgang Koch), a prisoner who has turned down her desire. But it comes at a price. Based on Oscar Wilde’s scandalous play, Strauss’ masterpiece and its famous "Dance of the seven veils” conclusion has the same power to shock as it did when first performed.
It’s known across the world as one of the finest opera houses. However, Italy’s La Scala theatre is faced with a controversial matter: Can we separate Russian culture from the decisions of the Russian government?
