Stories from the Hidden Worlds - Oymyakon, Russia Nigeria's Slum-on-Water - Makoko: 🤍 Oymyakon is known as "The Pole of Cold." A small town of 500 located in the Republic of Sakha in northeast Russia, it's widely regarded as the coldest inhabited town on Earth. Temperatures there average around -58° F during the winter months. Oymyakon has two main valleys beside it. These valleys trap wind inside the town and create a colder climate. However, children are still allowed to go to school if it is warmer than −55.0 °C (−67.0 °F). Some years the temperature drops below 0 °C (32 °F) in late September and may remain below freezing until mid-May. In Oymyakon sometimes the average minimum temperature for January, February, and December remains below −50 °C (−58 °F). Sometimes summer months can also be quite cold, but June and July are the only months where the temperature has never dropped below −10 °C (14 °F). Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk are the only two permanently inhabited places in the world that have recorded temperatures below −60.0 °C (−76 °F) every day in January. Deep in Russia’s frozen hinterland, where temperatures plunge and winters stretch endlessly, the residents of a remote town have built lives in one of the world’s most unrelenting environments. This is Oymyakon, a town of a few hundred people nestled between two valleys in Russia’s far-flung Sakha Republic. The town – a cluster of wooden houses whose foundations are sunk deep into permafrost – has earned the reputation of the coldest inhabited place on the planet. In temperatures reaching nearly -70 degrees Celsius, the people of Oymyakon have developed a distinctive culture. But two days' drive from the nearest city, the people’s way of life here is constantly imperiled by the sub-arctic conditions. Oymyakon is situated in Siberia, Russia. The settlement was started in the 1920's by reindeer herders who watered their reindeer in the thermal spring which gives the town its name, Oymyakon "Water that doesn't freeze". Around 500 people are living in Oymyakon but to be honest it's more about surviving than living. The average temperature in the colder months is -40 degrees Fahrenheit, there are only 3 warmer months, with temperatures averaging 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the record low was recorded in 1923 when temperatures dropped to -96. The houses don't have plumbing because the water would freeze in the pipes, so toilets are simple pits with a roof and door over them. The village has its own heating plant that burns coal none stop to heat water, which is then pumped through the village pipework. When outside, they have to keep their car's engine running, all the time, even when refilling at the gas station, if not, the fuel would freeze in seconds making it impossible to start again. They have a school, to which the kids have to go every day unless temperatures drop below -58f. Their diet is mainly meat because the ground is permanently frozen so no vegetables can be grown, this Permafrost also makes gravedigging a lengthy experience. first, they light a bonfire to defrost the ground, then dig down until the hit permafrost again, and then repeat. the process of digging a grave can take days. There is no cell phone coverage, but that's mainly because no one has made a cell phone that can work in such a cold climate. Siberia. Endless vastness – arctic temperatures. Even farther East than Japan and 5 000 kilometres north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, the coldest republic of Russia. Yakutsk is the capital of the Yakutia republic and is located about 5100 kilometres east of Moscow. In the midst of it: Oimjakon. With its 500 residents the coldest inhabited place on earth. This village lies in a mountain valley on the upper reaches of the banks of the Indgirka River. One of the major reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the humidity that the Ocean provides to a major part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains shield Siberia against the warm air from the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the door to the Artic stands wide open. Thus in the winter, cold masses of air expand into the Siberian landscape completely unrestricted. The average temperature in winter: Minus 40° Celsius. The children of the Siberian Oimjakon have the world`s coldest way to school. The extreme living conditions are completely normal for the residents of Oymyakon. This is also true for the Tariks family and their son Aljosha. He is 8 years old. The children of his age group are only excused from attending school on account of the cold at temperatures below minus 54° degrees. Even before his departure for school Aljosha feels the grim cold. Lacking running water the house also has no bathroom. So Aljosha alredy has to go outside – to the unheated outside earth closet in the garden. Sascha’s mother cooks tea. In order to do so, she must go to outside to the front of the house, which is made of wood- as all houses in Oymyakon. Due to the great temperature differences here, concrete walls would soon crack and be destroyed. In the short summers, it can get quite warm in Oymyakon. In front of the wooden house the ice blocks are stored. The next-door farmer had cut out of the frozen river for them. There is no running water in the Pole of Cold, with temperatures dropping to -65 degrees Celsius; no pipe work has a chance. Aljoshas mother puts the ice in the pot and cooks some tea for her son. Like every day, Aljosha must get ready to go to school. Like the majority of the other students, Sascha wears for the most part his traditional dress. The clothing prescribes to the onion-peel principle in order to protect the students from the Artic temperatures. His mother Irina has heated up the living room to 20° degrees. So when Aljosha opens the front door it is 70° degrees colder – every day life in Oimjakon. As soon as the children open the dormitory’s double doors, the icy cold brutally grabs hold of them. Within less than one second their nostrils become frozen. Unlike the students in other parts of the world, the children from Oymyakon are seldom playful but instead very concentrated on their way to school. With quick steps, they travel in groups, attempting to put the 2 kilometer route behind them as quickly as possible. There are no signs of snow ball fights. The don’t spend a second of time watching the cows, which are kept up to nine months of the year in their stalls, and are now coincidentally being lead out of the barn for a drink. Even though the cows are wearing some sort of special “bras” which protect their udders from freezing. Once in school building, Aljosha and the other students remove many of their layers of clothing, and get going with the school lessons. For the majority of them, a welcome diversion from the coldest inhabited town on the earth.

I spent a week in #Oymyakon, a remote town in Russia’s Siberia which is deemed to be the world's coldest inhabited place. The lowest recorded temperature here was -72°C or -96°F. Luckily for us, when we got to Oymyakon it was only… -51°C or -60°F and I never felt THAT cold in my entire life! We started our journey in Yakutsk, and we then drove for 2 days before we got to Oymyakon. Why people would want to travel to the coldest place in the world? Because it's just fascinating. Like in Oymyakon is so different from anything we're ever been used to. The town of Oymyakon is located between two mountain ranges causing the wind to focus directly onto the town. As a result, Oymyakon sees the lowest average winter temperature in the world, outside of Antarctica. Since there is no permanent population in Antarctica, Oymyakon holds the record of being the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world. Hats off to Oymyakon! The lowest temperature ever recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2 °C, which is commemorated with a monument on the main (and only) square at the centre of the town of Oymyakon. That is, however, an unofficial reading. On 6 February 1933, a temperature of −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) was recorded at Oymyakon's weather station - this was the coldest officially recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere. Only Antarctica has recorded lower official temperatures (the lowest being −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F), recorded at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983). The unofficial record cold temperature in Oymyakon is roughly 8°C warmer than the sublimation point of carbon dioxide.

Luckily there are a lot of fish to catch in extreme cold temperatures. Flights from Los Angeles to Yakutsk is about 30 hours and a one way ticket costs around 1000 American Dollars. This Is the Coldest Permanently Inhabited Place on Earth The remote village with a population of 500 people is in the corner of Siberia. Winter temperatures in Oymyakon, Russia, average - 56 °C to - 60°C. In the year 1926, Russian scientist Sergey Obrychev registered the lowest temperature −71.2 °C (−96.2 °F) recorded at Oymyakon’s weather station. Since then, it has become the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth. With the bitterly cold temperature, cars have to be left running so the mechanics don’t freeze up, the school only get a day off if the temperature dips below -52°C, there is no indoor plumbing, so most of Oymyakon’s homes have outdoor toilets, pen ink freezes, glasses freezing to people’s faces, mobile phone service is non-existent, It takes two or three days to dig a grave in frozen ground, taking photographs is a challenge that must be completed quickly before the camera and lens freeze and cracked if left it for an extended period of time. People in Oymyakon don’t often eat many vegetables and fruits because due to the harsh climate not many types of fruits or vegetables can grow there, but there are some types of berries, leaf plants, and root vegetables that grow in nature. I spent a week in #Oymyakon, a remote town in Russia’s Siberia which is deemed to be the world's coldest inhabited place. The lowest recorded temperature here was -72°C or -96°F. Luckily for us, when we got to Oymyakon it was only… -51°C or -60°F and I never felt THAT cold in my entire life!
